India has emerged as the third-largest automobile market, only behind China and USA.

India’s target is driven by the country’s support to the global EV30@30 campaign which aims at achieving electrification of 30% of newly registered private cars; 40% of new buses; 70% of commercial cars and 80% of two and three - wheelers.

As of today, a maximum of only 2% of total four wheeler sales are electric cars. People still rely on petrol and diesel powered cars even if EVs are cheaper to drive and easy to maintain.

The average running cost of an EV is ₹1.50 /km and that of a petrol or diesel is ₹10 – 15 /km.

With only 12,146 public charging stations as of February 2024, India equates to just 1 charging point for every 135 Electric cars on Indian roads.

For reference, China has 1 public charge station for every 10 EVs and USA has 1 public charge station for every 20 EVs.
